We work with people that many call clients but we like to call them our friends!

Supporting independent living and productivity in community inclusiveness.

What independent skills should all persons aspire to even with a cognitive disability?

1. Communication: Being able to express oneself through verbal, nonverbal, and written means.

2. Self-care: Being able to attend to one’s own needs such as dressing, grooming, and hygiene.

3. Money management: Being able to budget, count change, and make appropriate purchases.

4. Self-advocacy: Being able to identify and express one’s needs and preferences.

5. Self-direction: Being able to plan, set goals, and problem-solve to achieve those goals.

6. Social skills: Being able to interact appropriately and effectively with others.

7. Time management: Being able to plan, prioritize, and manage time effectively.

8. Independent living: Being able to navigate the community, use public transportation, and manage daily activities.

Materials for Learning

Many educational materials for adults with disabilities often have language that is not age appropriate. We try to simplify language but need to make it respectful and appropriate for their reading level. Materials are often out of date. We work with our students and creators to ensure materials are accessible to our friends.

Continuing Education for Teachers

The landscape of care for adults with disabilities is changing. We create continuing education programs and certification training to address the needs of teachers and their student communities. From training on the latest HHCS requirements to new pedagogical methods, we help teachers make programs engaging and successful.

Support from Communities

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning.

“With the support from our community, we have been able to serve our friends better than ever.”

— Christina Trevino, former CEO/Director of Buda’s Brightside
